Write & Abiword?

In other threads, Jimmy has noted that documents created in Write don't open very well in other programs (e.g. OpenOffice). Has anyone tried opening Write documents in Abiword on another computer? Does the file open properly?

I would try it myself, but I'm still waiting for mine...

Files saved in Write have the .odf extension, but they are actually saved in the Abiword format.  The problem was already reported and the fix will be integrated in the Update 1.  Please see the following ticket for more detailed information:

My quick-and-dirty shortcut around this issue was to install AbiWord on my WinXP laptop. Smiley I saved the files I created on the XO to the SD card, carried them over to the WinXP laptop, and used AbiWord to save them to a .doc format and export them to Google Docs.

I can't remember the link to the site where I downloaded AbiWord, but I do know that I found it with a Google search.

Or you could just use GoogleDocs for "word" and "excel".......

You can get it here: http://www.abisource.com/download/

They're fixing the document extension problem in the next update, so it might be a moot point for me because I may not get the laptop before then Wink

I did a few experiments, because I did find out I couldn't open the files in WordPerfect, which is the only other word processor I have on my computer at the moment.

If I create a file in AbiWord (on my desktop) and saved it as an .rtf or .doc, WordPerfect 12 says it's an invalid file format. However, when I sent the file to my Dad, who has Word 2003, it worked just fine. That reminds me of when I used to use Microsoft Works--and couldn't open the files in anything else other than "recover text from any file" in Word.

If I create a file on my XO, save it as .rtf,  transfer it to my desktop, and then try to open it in WordPerfect, it doesn't work. However, if I open the file with AbiWord first, save it, then open it again with WordPad and save it again as an .rtf file, it opens in WordPerfect just fine.

I sent the virgin file from my XO to my Dad (without first opening and saving it in AbiWord), and he got a bunch of code when he tried to open it. The same thing happened to me when I tried to open it with WordPad. Which is the bug that has been reported, so that's what I expected to happen.

As for AbiWord as a word processor, though, I do like it a lot better than Word. So downloading it as a temporary fix doesn't seem that terrible of a thing to have to do, to me, since I needed a decent word processor anyway.

Anyway. Now that I've spent an hour fooling around with this, it's time for me to go write. Smiley
