FBReader

has anyone installed this and got it working?
I've got it installed and it works, sort of. I created a new directory called ebooks (thru the terminal) and pointed the FBReader to that directory. FBReader sees the directory I created but nothing inside that directory. I've got compatible files in the directory. I've checked my permissions and that directory is readable by everyone.
Anyone have any ideas?

I've installed fbreader v0.8.8 under an XO VMware image (Canadian donor, so no XO yet) and it seems to work as expected. The library tree shows .oebzip files in the specified library directories and is able to open them perfectly.

Are you perhaps running as root?

"are you perhaps running as root?"

hmmm... I don't think so but I'll check that tonight when I get home. But, even if I were/am, why would this matter? root would have all privileges so I would be able to see into my directory wouldn't it?
but, if I am running as root, should I change it back to the olpc user?

I was thinking that if you were using ~ as a shorthand for your home directory, e.g., ~/ebooks, then, if you're running as root, this would be the same as /root/ebooks instead of /home/olpc/ebooks.

ahhh.. got it. Nope, I was in home/olpc/ebooks.
I found a work-around for now, the reader sees my usb stick just fine and reads off of that, but I still haven't figured out why it won't see into any of the directories that I've created.

I got it figured out. I though FBReader supported more formats than it seems too, copied some html and txt files into my directory and the reader saw them just fine.

this is what i found somewhere on line (i misplaced the link) to install it:

su

rpm -i http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/updates/7/i386/fbreader-0.8.8-2.fc7.i386.rpm

then its

FBReader to run it

works great with pretty easy key-mods too. but you have to scrolls the initial list of config tabs to find the key mappings.

Strange - this doesn't seem to work (or I'm doing something wrong).

Is there another way to install the FBReader?

Hmmm....still can't install it. I keep getting:

error: skipping rpm -ivh http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/updates/7/i386/fbreader-0.8.8a-1.fc7.i386.rpm

rpm - transfer failed - Unknown or unexpected error

warning: u 0x807d388 ctrl 0x807d9c8 nrefs != 0 (mirrors.kernel.org http)

I have no idea what any of that means. Help?

UPDATE: Umm...strangely enough, FBReader is running now, even though I haven't done anything since getting the above message. Okay. I will not question this. I'm just glad it finally works!

Your first stop should be Project Gutenberg. They have 20,000 public domain ebooks, almost all of which are available in Plucker format (nicely compatible with FBReader).

Thanks for the info about FBReader-compatible files. I've already downloaded a few from Project Gutenberg, and I've started reading through them.

I have only one more thing I would like to see... I wish that FBReader could be navigated via the gamepad buttons. Right now, the only way I've discovered to advance or back up is by using the Fn key + arrow keys. That means I can't fold the XO into tablet mode and read ebooks that way.
