1st Day Donor - West Coast -

December 15, 2007, 01:19:33 PM

You guys (a few of you at least) are getting to be very lucky.... I ordered at 3AM PST on the first day and still haven't gotten a word of confirmation from FedEx (I got all the standard 1st day, thanks for contributing, welcome to the olpc community, etc. letters)... I've called a half of a dozen times and it shows there is absolutely no package in the system for me... which is frustrating....

OLPC, what happened to first come first serve?

Ordered 11/18 online.  Arrived today (sorry first day donors).  I live just outside NYC.  This is a Christmas present for my kids, so I am very happy that it came early.   Smiley

Ordered late on November 15th, received yesterday, December 14th. No notification, just a small box on the porch (guess I'm lucky I have nosy neighbors, so it was pretty safe). All I can say to people who are still waiting is patience is a virtue!

Day 1 Donor!!

WWW
December 15, 2007, 09:16:02 PM

I'd be worried that mine got stolen too, since I've had things get stolen from my front door.  However, since Alex is also on the west coast and also a couple other people and none of us have gotten ours, I'm feeling safe about it.  Also, (I forget who) but someone from LA said they were told by FedEx that they'd get their XO delivered on 12/20.  So, I'm thinking us west coasters have that long to wait at least.  Then, there's XOpher's story of calling one day and FedEx saying they've no record of a shipment to him and then him calling the very next day to have them say it was on the truck out to him.  So, who knows?  I half-expected (but fully hoped!) I'd find a box waiting for me when I got home from spending the day in Hollywood, but nope.  I suppose I should call FedEx and see if I have something to look forward to on Monday.

Either way, the point of ordering (like Alex and other D1Ds) at 3am PT on the 12th was pretty much for nothing.    Then again, maybe it just takes less time for a truck to get from Illinois to New York than it does to get to Los Angeles and they were all *shipped* in the proper order?  Maybe the only way we'd *get* them in order of, well, ordering, was if they were given head starts?

At this point I think I'm done trying to reason out an explanation.  I'd just like to know one thing: when's it going to be here?

I don't want my XO to end up in the same place as my wife's birthday presents (the last things to be stolen from my front door). Sad

Also, Con: My plan was to unbox mine live on BlogTV.com Smiley  However, if it turns out that most everyone gets theirs before me, there's no point in doing it live.  I'll just shoot it myself and throw it up on Utterz at a later date.  Another factor is how close it shows up to that religious dude's birthday.  Things get more and more hectic the closer we get, soooo....

Good luck!

Question for those who have received their XO:  Will the shipping box fit through a 2 3/4 to 3 in. gap (in my case, between a cement floor and the bottom of a metal gate)?

Day 4 donor here -- my XO arrived on Saturday evening at about 6:30PM. I was surprised to get a parcel on a Saturday at that hour.

The box is small enough that, had it been stood on its side, I think it would have fit neatly between the screen door and the front door (or at least it wouldn't have left the screen door hanging wide open with the box in there).

Some sensible person placed a shipping sticker over the green laptop logo on the side of the box. The 1, the right-arrow, and the child logo are all plainly visible. But the one part of the shipping container that I thought was a bad idea, the image of the laptop that would clue people in to the box's contents, was concealed.

The battery did arrive fully charged. The box contained the XO, an AC adapter, a battery, a quick-start guide, and a letter from Nicholas Negroponte.

I had to set my wireless router to enable broadcast of the SSID, in order to allow the XO to find it and connect. I was able to type in the passkey without having to convert it to hexidecimal.

The keys really are wee -- smaller than I'd expected. But that's OK -- I've learned to touch type on PDA keyboards with even smaller keys, so I expect to acclimate to this keyboard with practice.

The device itself is a bit slower than I'm used to dealing with, but after having read previous reviews of the device, I wasn't surprised by that.

I never got any forewarning that the package was about to arrive, nor have I heard anything regarding the T-Mobile hotspot.

I hope for good news for everyone whose devices are on the way -- may everyone have speedy delivery of machines that work great! Smiley

P.S. I live in Philadelphia, PA. If I were to start looking for the proverbial "rhyme or reason" to the FedEx deliveries, the first parameters I would look at are the recipient's proximity to Libertyville, IL, to a FedEx hub, and to a major airport. Can anyone determine a delivery pattern based on the reports of who has received an XO and where they are?

The dimensions of the shipping box are 11" x 10 1/2" x 4 5/8".

I ordered the first day, at 6:06AM. I got my confirmation emails from and from Paypal. Not only hasn't FedEx anything in the pipeline for me ... but when I call LaptopGiving they claim I never ordered. No record of my name, email, or Paypal transaction id. They say I have to take it up with Paypal. Paypal says I have to take it up with LaptopGiving.

WTF?

Oh, man--Placain--that's terrible! Did you get charged?  If so, how could Paypal randomly charge you without OLPC placing the charge??  That makes no sense.  I hope you get it worked out.  Good luck to you!

Yup, got all the confirmation stuff. But when I called on Friday to ask about it, they'd never heard of me, my email address, my shipping address, my PayPal transaction ID, nothing.

Great.... and the donor services line is closed right now....

What do you plan to do to combat this?

I ordered mine first day whenever they started, and I got mine yesterday evening. I live in Los Angeles and it came by Fed Ex. No email etc but when I called them on Friday they had a package en route scheduled for delivery on Saturday. That's pretty much it. It's totally sweet!
