Here goes nothing...

To get your tracking number call OLPC Donor Services (number is 800-201-7144) and ask for your order confirmation number. Remember to be polite and strike up some idle chit-chat to help delay the line for the other anxious OLPC owners trying to follow my directions (don't worry, I won't tell). As soon as you get your order confirmation number (format is 70000XXXXX), say thank you, hang up and jump up and down in joy. Now go on the web to this website: http://www.fedex.com/AltRefTracking. Enter your order confirmation number in the refrence box (not the account box), enter the approximate ship date, change your country, and enter your postal code. Now hit track. If your laptop has been shipped (or a label printed) you will come up with a page that has your tracking number and shipping status... now the fun begins! If you don't get an entry, don't worry... maybe tomorrow!

Actually you don't even need to call OLPC to get your confirmation number. The confirmation number is included in your order confirmation e-mail from OLPC Customer Care (look in paragraph 3). You should have received this e-mail 4-5 days after your paypal confirmation e-mail. It's the one signed by Nicholas Negroponte.

If I'm not mistaken, there are many donor's that did not receive a confirmation email.  Only a paypal receipt, like me.

The confirmation number was not in all of the confirmation emails, sadly.  Mine and many others had no confirmation number at all.  They added it later on, I think.  So, this is definitely a good thing to do and it works from my own experience.

It is making me very sad how poorly all of this seems to be handled. The email I received has no confirmation number on it. In fact, it has no reference at all to the transaction.

Things would have been so much nicer for everyone (particularly OLPC's phone reps) if they had just taken the time to figure out how to dump our email addresses into the shipping transactions so that FedEx would send us a tracking number.

Sorry, I was unaware that not all the confirmation e-mails had them. I knew some people had not received a confirmation from OLPC, but I thought those that did were all the same. Both of my confirmations for my 2 orders were worded exactly the same and had the confirmation number in the same spot- paragraph 3.

Thanks for this tip. I spent 70 minutes on the phone last night with OLPC, and that lovely music, to get my confirmation number. With a little digging, they were able to find it. I guess the fact that the name on the card that made the 'donation' and the name on the shipping address were different cause a little confusion.

Last night I plugged that number into FedEx, with no results.

This morning I tried again, and it worked.

Very much relieved!

Now I can spend my time anticipating the crafty new ways I can compute.

I just received an email from FedEx.  It was for a ring I ordered from a company in Canada.  They have a system where when they generate a packing slip, they enter an email addy in with all of the other info, and it sends out an auto e-mail.  If only the 4.5 Billion dollar company who handles 1 in every 20 cellphones world wide could get the technology a titanium jewelery workshop in Canada has.

The Order # finally worked today and we have 4 packages around 22 pounds coming our way from Illinois. =) The estimated delivery date is Friday, so I won't be able to share the results of the company-wide Mesh experiment until the weekend. Sorry everyone.
