installing gps driver

Hello,

I bought a Globalsat BU-353 gps receiver.  I was hoping to just plug it in to a USB port and it would start working with the SeaClear navigation software I have installed, but I now see that a driver needs to be installed.  I have a CD with the required drivers.
You can see them here.http://www.usglobalsat.com/download/62/linux_usb_driver.zip
The Linux drivers are listed as being for Redhat.

Question.  Will a driver which I guess is intended for Redhat work with Sugar?
How do I download the driver into my XO without using the CD auto install?
I assume I can download the driver to USB flash card and then transfer it into my XO, but I am a Linux newbie and do not know the commands to use in terminal or were the driver should go.

Any help appreciated.

why do you think it needs a new driver?  i don't recall having to install anything at all in order to make my gps receiver work (same as yours, i believe).

plug it in, and you should get a new device at /dev/ttyUSB0.  tell your nav. s/w to use that, and you're good to go.

(you're right that there's a driver involved, but the XO comes with it pre-installed, and it gets auto-loaded when you plug in the device.)

Thanks to Pauls help for getting my GPS working on my XO with SeaClear software.
He is a genius.
I had to go into the vi editor

su -
 vi /etc/group

and change  "uucp::14:uucp" to uucp::14:uucp,olpc and changed "lock::54:" to
lock::54:olpc

Its going to be great using the XO for navigating the boat this summer!

you're clearly talking about another paul, because i certainly forgot all about that issue.  very sorry -- i had to do the same thing, of course.

glad you got it working!

paul

p.s. actually, i didn't need to join the "lock" group -- did you really need to do that, or was it just suggested as good practice?

I thought you might be the same Paul.  All Pauls must be smart.

As for needing to join the lock group.  I have no idea.  I just did what I was told.
Can you think of any ill effects?

no, no ill effects -- joining the "lock" group should be fine.
