T-Mobile Hotspot: I Cannot Login :-(

Problem: When the OLPC Laptop is redirected to the hotspot login screen, the usual prompt which appears in the upper right hand corner merely shows a big white area.  I cannot login to the T-Mobile HotSPot using the OLPC.

Background: I am at Starbucks with two laptops.  A Dell (from which I am posting this message) and the OLPC laptop.  I can compare the login screens between the two laptops and see that the OLPC is missing the same credentials area the Dell sees.

Here's what the Dell sees:

* Upper left: "T-Mobile Hotspot"
* Middle left: "New to HotSpot? "Get a DayPass", Sign Up, etc"
* Middle right: "Already using HotSpot? Refill my account, manage my account, see all locations, customer support"
* Upper right: Userid, Password, provider

My OLPC sees everything above BUT the userid, password and provider.  Please see the attached JPG; the area in yellow is what is missing from the OLPC.

Funny enough, one time the page loaded very slowly and, for a fraction of a second, I saw the missing three fields (but then they disappeared).

Has anyone been able to login to http://hotspot.t-mobile.com ?

Is there an alternate URL I can try? Other thoughts?

I'm on the phone with OLPC support (well on HOLD...) but assuming I get through and assuming I get my hotspot number...I'll try it out today and let you know what I find...

I'm putting this one on T-mobile.  They should have verified that their service would work on the device before they offered up the service.  They have had plenty of time to run the emulator and create a separate login page.

Has anyone who installed the opera browser tried this?

Its even cooler than I expected.

JB: From your .sig, I gather you don't have yours yet.  All I need is someone else to confirm that I'm not nuts and I'll go to T-Mobile and give them a fair shot of acknowledging and fixing the problem.  This would be a "black eye" for T-Mobile if this ever got out.  And I *love* T-Mobile - so I'm trying to fix a problem before it becomes widely known.

Edit: I might add one does NOT need a Hotspot account to verify my results.  Simply go to any FedEx, Kinko's, Starbucks and use the browser to surf to any site (e.g. cnn.com). You'll be automatically redirected to the HS login site.

Okay, this is a little out of my depth, but I might be able to give some insight.

The page info for the Tmobile login page shows that the login/signup boxes are done in Javascript (i.e. a .do extension on the file).  (You can see this if you are using Firefox as your browser, go to the sign-in page, which I found at https://selfcare.hotspot.t-mobile.com/accountcreate/BeginSignup.do and then click on "Tools" and "Page Info.")

This page at the OLPC wiki talks about how Java is not shipped by default: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Java

This page, also at the wiki, talks about installation of "Restricted" formats (i.e. Java): http://wiki.laptop.org/go/RestrictedFormats#Sun_Java

Installation of Java may correct the problem of not being able to see the sign-in boxes.

Eden: Thanks for your response.

Well..it's a little out of my depth also - but you made it farther than I did.  I woulda' thought that if TMO was going to give us 1 year's free access that it woulda' worked out of the box.  While I understand what the second link was telling me to do (what?Huh no 'man' command on the OLPC?  Grin ), I'm not sure if I'm do to it.

Just this morning I was at SB and I had at *least* three people approach me as the recognized the OLPC.  I talked it up - including the one year's free access.  I made one sale for TMO.

Maybe I was over thinking this (i.e. that we could use our OLPC at a HotSpot)?  Was I only one who was looking forward to spending hours sunk into a big, comfy chair learning about the OLPC on the internet?

Well, when OLPC says this is an Education Project, they really mean it.   Wink

I found some more info on a page about Opera: http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/show.dml/704304
It mentions that you can turn javascript back on.  Maybe installing Opera and using it to access the Hotspot would work.

And here is a nice post about how to install Opera without breaking your head: http://olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=306.msg1961#msg1961

I"ve installed Opera and will swing by the local starbuck and give both browsers a try...I'll post late tonight with the results... (btw I don't have my hot spot account/pin or anything...so I can't actually try to log in, but I can at least put up the page and see if the log in info is there...)

Eden: Yeah..saw the posts on Opera.  Thanks. I used Opera back in the mid to late 90's - but will give it a shot in the morning.

Atif: Yup...you won't need an account.  While logged into the hotspot, simply attempt to hit any website and you'll be redirected.  Unfortunately I won't have a chance to install Opera or walk the Starbucks until Thursday afternoon.

Success (I think).  I installed Opera earlier in the day... But realized I didn't have Java installed.  I did that, but that made me late for a dinner engagement, but I still swung by Starbucks and I *think* it worked...I got a log in panel in the upper right hand corner.  If I remember right from someone's earlier post..they got a blank box.  I took a quick picture with my Treo.  I might give it a try tomorrow when I am not so rushed

Wow sorry that is so blury...but if you compare this to the screen capture someone posted earlier in the forum topic, I *think* it is right/working.

What do people think?

Again I had to install Java with my Opera.  I never tried it with just Opera without Java, nor did it occur to me to try the default browser to verify the default browser doesn't work.

I will post more info on how I actually installed Java over at this thread (Wow! opera...)

Oh wow!  So I went to this website and then entered the 70000XXXX number from the side of the box my XO came in and that gave me the pin and the link to actually create the account.

On that page I noticed that the account has to be created by June 30, 2008 and is good for 1 year after creation.  It occured to me that I don't need it right away as I'm not traveling in the near future.  So I decided to NOT create the account just yet.  Thanks so much for the info!  Now WHY the person I talked to when I called OLPC support couldn't have told me this same info is beyond me!

Wow.  I would never enter personal information into a IP address URL - without at least tracing it to see if it goes back to a legitimate site.  A subsequent poster seems to indicate it worked for him/her.  Me?  I'll hold off until I see proof it's a legit site.

May I ask where you got that URL FPScott?

Edit: SMF does quoting a little different than I'm used to; fixed spacing

Edit2: Following up on my own post.  I'm NO EXPERT on this, but if you go to samspade.org and enter in the ipaddress 64.34.176.239  it returns web1.greenwoodhall.com .  While web1.greenwoodhall.com does not resolve, www.greenwoodhall.com DOES resolve to website which has to do with Customer Service solutions.  So, at first blush, it would appear that the URL *might* be correct. :-)  At least it does not go to some rouge website in a foreign country...

Yup.  That was what I *never* saw.  I too will install Java and Opera later today and see if my login was successful.  Thanks for your efforts on this as it makes me feel better about the whole HS issue :-)
