"Delivered" but not Received (a G1G0 story)

I am very sad to report that, after calling FedEx to track my XO, and hearing that it was delivered today, it is not within my eager, clutching hands.  I assume that it was taken off my doorstep while I was at work :-(

I had followed the directions to call FedEx to track the package yesterday and learned that it was to arrive today.  When I got home, no package.  So I called FedEx and they reported that it had been delivered at 1130am where the driver had released it at my front door (no signature required).

After checking with all my neighbors (I live in Boston) and searching all the nooks around my house, I called back and initiated a "claim". The nice FedEx person on the phone said that it would take about 3 days: 1 day for the info to get forwarded to claims, one day for the driver to respond, and a day of processing.  After that it would be declared lost (in some sense, I didn't catch all the shipping jargon).

So I'm sad that it appears my holiday season won't be brightened by a XO, but I hope that, if someone else has it (and it isn't just trapped under a snow drift) that they're enjoying it as much as I hoped to.

Of course, I have low hopes, considering how the other deliveries and disputes are running, that I'll have a replacement shipped anytime soon.

Take care everyone and I hope that your XO makes it into your hands.

(updated: misspelling and added g1g0 keyword to title)

Ouch. I'm sorry to hear that, bensheldon Sad

It's really ridiculous how they're happily leaving what's (effectively) a 400 dollar piece of equipment on your doorstep without a care in the world.

I hope you get a replacement!

unless the person sells it on ebay or give it away, you can try to hook up with other XOers in your area and see if suspcious person shows up on mesh around your house...

Did you only speak with FedEx, or did someone inside of OLPC say that when FedEx concludes it's investigation that OLPC will then send you a replacement?

Thanks

I am in the same situation.  It was delivered while we were at home but the FedEx driver did not ring our doorbell and now I have no laptop for my daughter.  I wrote a post on my blog about it at http://williamjones.info/very-upset-with-olpc-customer-care-and-fedex/

If anyone else is in the same situation, please share your progress.

Unfortunately, OLPC and BrightStar are doing a terrible job of delivering laptops. I had been thinking about making another G1G1 donation, but until they fix the shipping problems, I am extremely hesitant to do so. That's more money that OLPC is losing in lost sales, on top of the money they're losing for replacement laptops and credit card chargebacks. I'm not sure who is more to blame for the problems, but I'm leaning towards BrightStar. They're the ones hired for their expertise in shipping, and they should know better than to ship without signatures required.

(FYI, at my home I left a note asking FedEx to hold the package at the FedEx terminal for pickup, but they ignored it and left the package anyway. Luckily, I knew the scheduled delivery date and was able to get home while the laptop was still there.)

(MIA XO guy here) I have only spoken with FedEx and have not contact OLPC yet.  I assume that OLPC won't be able to act until the package is officially declared lost by FedEx.  But when it is declared lost (t-minus two days now), I will contact OLPC---I assume they're overwhelmed and I'd rather leave the phone lines open at this point for people with more immediate (and hopeful) needs.

Plus I'm kind've hoping (wishing...) that some neighborhood kid's parents is going to see it, inquire where it's from and make them return it with a sheepish and apologetic note.  Or maybe I have the (rare) cut-corner Fed-Ex driver who, upon getting the inquest from HQ, will discover the package lurking in the back of his truck (or under his sticky-handed christmas tree).

gelvin-- I'm really sorry to hear you're in the same straights as I.  And, we didn't even get the thrill of an empty box :-)

I had the same problem (http://olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=236.0
but fortunately, it got delivered the next day.  I guess the driver retraced his steps
and got it back from where he had delivered it the previous day.  Hope your XO gets
delivered too ...

I had a $54 dollar titanium ring shipped to my house the same day my XO shipped.  The ring got to my house last night, and I had to drive all the way out to the local FedEx hub to pick it up because they were not allowed to release it w/o a "witnessed" signature (The driver even wrote VOID over the signature line on the door tag).  I wonder how much extra that could possibly add to the shipping cost

Same boat as the title, but different situation.  I had mine delivered to work, receptionist in the lobby all day.  Tracking said "Delivered" this morning, but when I went downstairs the receptionist hadn't seen Fedex ground.  I called fedex up and apparently Brightstar didn't put my suite number on the box and they couldn't deliver it.  I gave them the correct address and they claim it will get delivered tomorrow.  I'm not super keen on the person I was talking to on the phone so I'll probably call them back and try to get someone else to confirm they actually will try to deliver it to the correct address.  Wee!  Good thing I got the confirmation number and tracked the package or I would never have found out about this and it would have been sent back.  Not a good customer experience.  I'm a bit miffed that my address magically lost the suite number and phone number associated with it between me ordering and a label being created.  My paypal receipt has all the correct info on it.  Anyway definitely a bit miffed by the whole process.  I mean honestly how hard is it to make a shipping address correctly when you already have all the correct info from the end user?

As for the OP, that totally sucks!  I live in SF and no delivery company in their right mind would leave a package sitting on the street around here.   I hope OLPC/fedex people actually get you a laptop soonish, though I'm sure it will be tough and it sucks to deal with.

same thing happened to me. i moved after ordering the XO but i'm friends with the guy who moved in after me so i let him know that a package was coming. i finally got a confirmation number from the olpc people yesterday. today i finally figured out how to check the status with the alt ref tracking page and noticed that it was supposed to have been delivered last night at 10:40pm. i called my friend and he said that he had some other mail for me but no package. i called fedex and they've started a trace on it. i'm hopeful that it'll turn up in the back of the drivers truck.

Drewish -- I hope the trace turns up your XO. Apparently, without signature confirmation, the driver doesn't even have to ring the doorbell when they drop off a package.

I haven't heard back from FedEx yet.  This is day three so I'll probably give them a ring this evening.

Yesterday, I just got my OLPC Customer Care email: "Coming soon: Your XO laptop".  What tragic comedy.

My story continues with me not getting a laptop for a second day in a row.  After discovering address problems (They had left of my companies suite number and the fact it was a company) yesterday they assured me they now had the correct address and it would be delivered today.  Fedex tracking showed it getting put on a truck for delivery at 7:16am, yet at 11:18am I got, you guessed it, a 'delivery exception' because of a 'future delivery request' which as you can imagine I certainly didn't request.  After waiting on hold (where they explained to me they wouldn't be in operation on Christmas) I got a hold of someone who told me they were switching it between the home delivery and ground delivery truck and it would be delivered Monday (Christmas Eve? Riiiiiiight.)  After pointing out that their tracking system said it was "out for delivery" I was put on whole for a while and then told they would call me back when they worked out what was going on.   So I have an 'hour or two' to kill and hope they actually do call me back.  I don't care if they don't drop it off, I just need to know where it is so I can pick it up.  Very vexing.
