Internet Virtual Mesh -- New 'public' Jabber server

The XO ships with a default setting for Jabber (the internet sharing service) of ship2.something.org.  Last time I checked, it wasn't actually working.

There's usually a few people on the developers' Jabber server at invalid.invalid.co.uk (look it up if you NEED it) , but it's really intended for development stuff.

If you want to play around with the mesh stuff without having another XO nearby, try using the xochat.org server that started working Wednesday night.  I have permission to post it here for load testing.  Smiley

1.  Go to the terminal window.
2.  sugar-control-panel -g jabber    (hint:  type  sugar-co   then hit tab to complete the command)
      will display your current setting.
3.  sugar-control-panel -s jabber xochat.org
will change to the public server.
4.  Reboot Sugar with CTRL-ALT-ERASE    (CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE in an emulator session)

Within about a minute of Sugar starting, you should start seeing other people.

Play.  Laugh.  Post results.

Did this and everything went as planned, but I didn't see anyone. Surely I'm not the only one on here...

I'm curious about everything.

I got connected late last night and saw Rick logged into in his instance of the Chat activity. But then I had to go to sleep. I'll be back on later today. Having this new Neighborhood space will be fun.

I'm leaving for work now, but it's working at 8:30am (US Eastern Time) on Thursday.

At this point, there are still some issues, so expect them.  The Chat activity has a bug in the shipped XO software load -- it scrolls too fast.  "We" have been sharing Write activities instead and assigning unique colors to each person's text.  That's actually a decent workaround for now.  It's bizarre to watch the screen update in three places as everybody types.  You also have to remove text periodically to keep the screen from getting too full.

One thing that seems to really help the connection is to change the jabber setting back and forth, then reboot Sugar.

sugar-control-panel -s jabber olpc.collabora.co.uk    (Ctrl-Alt-Erase)
Look at all the hard working developers !!!

back to the Terminal...
sugar-control-panel -s jabber xochat.org      (C-A-E)
Look at all the G1G1 people !!!

Will this jabber setup persist through reboots?
If not, is there a config file somewhere to make it persistent?

Yes, it will persist between reboots.

Thanks for this thread! I set my server to xochat.org, and so far I see one other person on there. I added him to my friends, and invited him to chat, but haven't seen a response yet.

When someone sends an invite, what does the recipient see if they are working on something else/ Does the invite automagically appear on their screen no matter what they are doing? Or do they have to be on a particular screen or activity to see it?

Ditto for responses to invitations: do I have to be on a certain screen to see the response, or can I just surf and read ebooks, etc, and when a response comes in I'll see it no matter what?

If you scroll the pointer to the edge of the screen (to display the Activities menu), you will have an extra Activity visible -- this one will be filled with color (from the invitee).  So, if I invited you to a Chat activity, you would see an additional Chat bubble filled with Blue (instead of being hollow/white inside) usually at the left edge of the list.

Click on the new icon to join.   You can also join any activity visible in the neighborhood...

This is a different issue.  The function that automagically scrolls old text up the screen is a little overzealous.  So, when the screen fills up (after about 10 chat messages), it should move everything up a couple messages.

Instead, it scrolls them all the way off the screen, and you have to manually scroll backwards to see the previous messages.  It gets worse with time, so after 30 messages, you'll have to scroll up several screens of whitespace to see any text.  Each new message will update the screen, so it's a constant struggle to see any messages.

Rumored to have been fixed in build 563 if you're in a mood to upgrade.

Perhaps you meant build 663, but unfortunately this is still an open issue: https://dev.laptop.org/ticket/2351. The fix in Update.1 so far is that if you scroll back up manually then the scrolling goes manual, and it won't scroll down to the bottom (of the blank space) on every new message - but you will need to scroll manually.

Note that build 663 (Update.1) has rainbow security enabled, and some activities don't work or have additional bugs because of that. Also you need a developer key to install it.

After I set my server to xochat.org last night a chat group appeared in my neighborhood view.  I also saw 4 or 5 other Xs (both in neighborhood and in friends views).  I'm guessing that these Xs appeared because of xochat.org and not because there are 4 or 5 people in my immediate vicinity who also have an XO. ??

Gabey8, I also sent friend invites to the people I saw but didn't get any replies, either.

Debbie,

I know I'm guilty of staying logged onto xochat.org even when I'm not actively monitoring the computer.

In part, that's because I want people to see at least one other person on the screen after making the
change -- to verify that 'it' is working.

Thanks for the explanation, Rick.  Smiley  I wasn't sure if other people could see me or not.
