Having just discovered that OLPC has started an Official blog... and noting that they so far have not posted a word as to why they are overlooking Canada this year for G1G1, I suddenly thought, hey!  If enough Canadians leave them comments asking them to comment on this debacle... maybe we will at least get a straight answer from the horses' mouth!?!?!?!!!!  Undecided

So... here you go... leave the offical blog a comment about G1G1 in Canada:

They contracted whit Amazon to do fulfillment (shipping) this year to avoid the disasters and headaches of last years G1G1. And Amazon doesn't ship electronics to Canada.

And no one had more shipping nightmares last year  than the Canadians, believe me. But cutting us off completely rather than finding a Canadian solution isn't really the answer either.  It simply continues to dimminish the Canadian view of the OLPC more.

Amazon.ca does not deal in anything but books, DVDs, and CDs... but if OLPC went with something like Future Shop in Canada we could at least have a G1G1. It is not like there aren't any solutions other than begging friends, relatives, and Americans in general and paying double the shipping (i.e. shipping to your house plus onward forwarding).

I don't think Canadians would be upset if it weren't for the fact that we were included in G1G1 *last year* and we aren't included *this year* without any real explanation other than a shrug that Amazon doesn't ship electronics to Canada.

Pretty pathetic really.  Everyday at school my conversations go something like this:

"Oh hey, neat laptop.  Thats one of those OLPC things, yeah?  How'd you get one."

"I donated.  If you give one you get one, etc."

"Oh sweet, hey where can I find info on that"

"Don't bother they don't ship to Canada anymore."

Hey, I think that we should be happy that we were included in G1G1 v1.  They Europeans were left in the cold last time.  Canadians are being left in the cold this time.  While it is a fairly big deal, it sure ain't the end of the world.  Personally, I think the bigger deal should be with the lack of XO's in Canadian schools at this point.

And were the shipping problems in Canada any worse than they were in the US?  Yeah, yeah.  I know about the 2 month delay.  But I consider that to be more of a communications problem, mostly because we didn't know whether we were low priority or if they were having trouble importing them.  Shipping problems include things like the apparent database issues that left G1G1 D1D's wondering if they would ever receive a machine after seeing people who contributed weeks into the campaign get one.  Or what about the MIA machines (incidentally, did everyone end up getting their XO).

Jordan, "just glad to we were included"... a very Canadian outlook indeed.  The thing is to be continually included and not just a one-off effort.  The Official Blogger SJ is now telling me that Canada will be allowed to order off Amazon.co.uk eventually, but that will mean international shipping charges, no tax receipts, and being taxed GST at the border. We deserve to be treated equally to all the other G1G1 donors, but that is just my opinion.  Perhaps I am just not your typical Canadian?!

I know some people who never did get their XOs last time around on both sides of the border, but your point about last year's problems is well taken.  I think the Canadian issues were more challenging only because they held up delivery of any XOs to Canada for much longer than the US. And then it came in spurts. But my point is that they have fixed the problem vis-a-vis the US and then simply frozen Canada out of the mix.

Hi CG - Why would this mean no tax receipts?  Canada and the EU are being treated the same -- with the same shipping charges, receipts, and dates of availability.   SJ
