We got ours yesterday (one for each of my 3 kids, ages 6-9). I decided to give them their Christmas present early. They love it! The mesh is the best feature and really turns using a computer into an interactive activity rather than isolating solitaire. They're not going to get bored with this, even when the novelty of the activity, itself, wears off.

The kids figured out on their own pretty quickly how to navigate the activities and journal, with the exception of the mesh, which we had to look up. (I was pretty inept when they asked me, but they just tried things until they worked.) They spent about an hour using chat. They wished their friends were on the neighborhood map and were in awe of the picture on the wiki showing multiple X's on the map. I can see how the mesh network will be revolutionary for villages as a way to communicate without a phone line.
The keyboard is the right size for their hands, but too small to be practical for an adult.
My advice -- try to convince your kid's neighboring friends to buy one! This is a big hit (in fact I hear my son getting up at 5:45 a.m. and unfortunately waking up his sister to get back to using it!!)

Congratulations of doing this for children.  You will not regret the decision.

I am at the stage where my grandchildren are in college or college graduates.  I
have not regretted getting them involved in electronic technology when they
were very young.

And, thanks to you, Zanne, I got online with T-Mobile. You and your
very clear instructions are a great asset to this community.
Next I'm going to try the ethernet adapter and then, with the help of Pippy and a little bit of help from friends, learn to use Sugar and to program in Python.
