I got my XOs for my two kids. They R4 kids!

December 26, 2007, 08:21:51 AM

I AM SORRY, BUT THIS MAKES NO SENSE TO ME... CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN MORE CLEARLY? THIS IS THE DIRECTIONS ON THE NEWS FORUM SITE FOR CONNECTING WITH OTHER XO USERS... I DO NOT KNOW WHAT "sugar-control-panel -g jabber will display your current setting" means for example. You have to realize we are out here all alone never having seen one of these computers before santa brought it. Don't assume we know what you know. Thanks! Here is the instructions below that I an unable to follow:

Tom Hoffman has set up a virtual machine for load testing and as Rick Evans explains, its amazingly simple to jump in:

   1. Go to the terminal window.
   2. sugar-control-panel -g jabber will display your current setting.
   3. sugar-control-panel -s jabber xochat.org will change to the public server.
   4. Reboot Sugar with CTRL-ALT-ERASE

GregoryBoysMom,

Here's the geek-to-English translation:  Wink

1. Start the terminal activity by clicking on the terminal icon. It looks like a window with a $ in it.
2.typing sugar-control-panel -g jabber and then hitting the enter key will show you what the XO is currently set to:
3. You can change that setting to the one you need to use for the mass XO chat by typing
sugar-control-panel -s jabber xochat.org and hitting the enter key.
4. The last step is to reboot the XO by pressing the Control, Alt and Erase buttons at the same time. When the XO reboots it will now be set to allow you to chat with other XOs by using the xochat.org servers.

Hope this makes sense

Great. Thank you. Will this setting remain after we reboot or do we have to do this each time we turn the computer on? Thanks.

Also, you seem to know what you are talking about so can you confirm that the XOs do not have email capabilities? Please help. Thanks!

that's debatable  Grin

question 1: yes it should remain after you reboot.
question 2. I dont know of an email application(activity) but I hear that lots of folks are using gmail (but only with the "old" look).

GregYohn,
I don't actually have my XO yet, so I'm not sure what you're describing. Are you getting some type of "low memory" waring while using xochat?

Hi!

The machine will not type letters in TERMINAL or run other Activities properly. The screen power button does not change in steps from off to high, when the memory is gone. It just goes from off to high.

Thank you!  You are saying, in print, that the OLPC way is arcane and difficult to understand for a non-geek adult.

I hope you will receive a courteous reply to your question, because many of the people, here, are rolling their eyes that you don't understand something as 'simple' as Linux command line instructions. Linux commands are 'words' computer programmers use to make the XO do something. Actually typing in these commands is a thirty year old way of controlling computers. Most of us, today, use mice, windows and buttons to control computers.

I also hope you will receive a courteous reply because your plea for help implies doubt about the OLPC way. We have heard the hype for years and, now that we can see the product, we can't help but wonder at some of the design choices. Your question points out that maybe the evolution of computing over the last thirty years should not have been ignored by the OLPC team. Maybe users won't want to type in Linux commands. Given a choice, users have never wanted to interact with computers that way.

If chat is this complicated, imagine children and educators in the third world trying to do anything else. Imagine the implications for the XO and the OLPC vision? I think you would agree that using the XO will need to a whole lot easier to use in order to make the vision come true.

fyi, Gmail works great for me. I can even upload attachments, which I cannot with Yahoo Mail. I'll have to try linuxmail, sometime. Is it free? Can I use/import/export contacts and include attachments?

I don't know why we should get different results with Gmail. Another bug? Now that we have machines in hand, the bugs are certainly showing up. Maybe the US distribution is just a cheap way to get bug testing done on hardware and software.

GregoryBoysMom, Gmail works fine for me. What happens when you try to go there?

You can also try their mobile version if you just need to send or check email quickly. It loads much faster, but doesn't have advanced features: http://m.gmail.com/

Well, linuxmail only sort-of works with the XO browser, like Yahoo. Yes, you can write emails and even upload attachments. But, you can't import an existing contact list from any of the popular mail apps. And even if you did, you can't use the linuxmail contact list with the XO browser. When you attempt to include selected contacts from the contacts screen, nothing happens. Your only option at linuxmail with the XO, is to type each address in manually. Ugh. Not charming.

Hi!

I really think the USA distribution is a good way to get out bugs!

We really are not as dependent on our 2nd, 3rd, or 4th machine from working fine. Out of the country, they will be first time buyers!

I noticed that I ran out of memory and had to remap my flash hard drive. Even having too many programs open will do it to some machines. Children will not say, that the machine is out of memory. They will bash the XO on their desks in frustration! As a concerned parent, I took the time and used this message board to learn how to do it properly.  Grin

From the message board, I think I was the first to identify memory was a problem. Really, not every program needs to downloaded on the machine and at a school they need to look out for too many programs or other operating problems like that happening. I think a school should have a custom version adapted to include the items they need or use.

i  have found that gmail works when using the sugar browser.  I have found  that it is not possible to attach a file to an email.  This is a known issue and apparently is being addressed in update 1.

Would someone who is having difficulty with gmail post some specific detail in order that it can make sense to me.

If Opera is loaded and use to gmail, the attachment functions properly.

fwiw
While reading this and other issues I continue to marvel at the different beatings some searchers use when making their way through the straights of techland.  The least interesting are those that lash themselves to the mast and howel at the wind.

Interesting. I am still able to upload attachments with a one week old XO and Gmail (just checked again).  I wonder if your machine has a different OS or browser.

It does take forever, however, for the XO to load a list of files you might attach...more than a couple of minutes...but it will eventually show you the journal list with journal names (not the real names of the files!)
