Using a mouse with the xo

I have used a Logitech Wheel mouse (M-BJ58) with the xo without any issues. The scroll wheel works just fine fine and it makes using the xo a whole lot easier. I plan on buying a small laptop mouse to use while browsing the internet from my easy chair. Using a saved browsing session with bookmarks I figure I can use the xo in tablet mode with the mouse on my arm rest or knee and avoid the awkwardness of a clamshell laptop open on one's lap.

I found the Targus Retractable Ulra-portable notebook mouse at Staples for $20.99.

It works great and is the perfect size for the XO.

I got the saitek wheel mouse.  Simply because it's green Smiley
The only issue I've had is that it isn't recognized after a reboot.  You have to unplug and plug it back in to use it.
Not sure if it's specific to this mouse, or an XO thing.

Left-handed mouse?

I tried a Logitech LX5 cordless optical mouse (Circuit City has them for $9.95 after rebates). It worked without any problems--as a right-handed mouse. Does any Linux/XO wizard know how to get the mouse to work as a left-handed mouse?

From Terminal window, type

xmodmap -e "pointer = 3 2 1"

If it works for you, you may want to add the line to your /home/olpc/.xsession file so that buttons are configured automatically at every boot.

I picked up a small Inland "laptop" mouse for $5.99 at a local store that works great with the XO.  Using a mouse is so much better than the track pad.  My concern is that the scroll wheel is illuminated (blue, not green, darn) and I'm not sure how much that will affect power consumption when using the XO on battery power.

Hi!

I have a Microsoft Wheel Optical USB Mouse. It works fine and I discovered that I am about 4 times more efficient!

Irish_Moss,
My nieces have had my XOs for several days and I've only now been able to pry them out of their hands or I would have checked this out earlier.
So...I tested my green Saitek simultaneously with the Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000 and a SIIG notebook mouse.  I rebooted 5 times and every time the Saitek did not work until I unplugged it and plugged it back in.  The other two mice worked fine after rebooting.  So the problem appears to be specific to this mouse.  I praised the mouse elsewhere on these forums and will go back and revise my post with this new info.  Thanks.

Thanks tamichan. Works great!

I think that I need to find a good Red Hat/Linux for Windows Dummies website and/or book.  ;-)  It's getting frustrating following different people's 'cookbook' instructions without knowing what I'm doing or why I'm doing things.

I wonder how one of these would look with it:

http://store.grandtec.com/viinmoye.html

It says "yellow" but it looks more like glow-in-the-dark-green-ish (though I doubt it glows)... and it seems to follow the same function esthetic as the XO, what with the 'indestructable' thing and being washable, disinfectable, etc.

Probably not green enough though Undecided

The cookie monster Kidzmouse is just about the perfect green and fits a kid's hand beautifully.   Very easy for a four year old to use.  ( And I'm assuming some of you did get those XOs for kids.)

The T-Rex model is not the right green at all, too olive.  Rugratz might look okay, but we don't happen to have one of those to check.

You can get  Kidzmouse mice for less than $10 if you shop carefully.  They don't look as sturdy as they seem to be.  Our have withstood lots of drops and lots of dust.

The mouse comes in a few other colors (or color combinations), too.

If we can't match the green of the XO, some of use might be able to match the colors of the XO logo on our laptop's case. Smiley
