If you're organizing a XO meetup this month-sih:, December 29-Jan 31, please shout out here.  I'll combine all these into a post for OLPC News so those w/ and w/o XO's can come together and mesh.

I forgot to add that I'd love to have a paragraph or two from each group on the results of your meet-up.  How many showed, what did you talk about, were there any odd reactions, and what are your next plans?

Day 1 Donor - Twin Cities MN

January 08, 2008, 08:34:32 PM

The local computer consultant group, ICCA-MN, has graciously invited the TCXO User group to a joint meeting on January 17.  Here is part of the invite; please see the full announcement in the TCXO Users Group forum.  I'll have a full report by the end of the month.

-----------
Our Thursday, January 17, dinner meeting will be held jointly with the Twin Cities user group for the XO laptop at our regular January meeting location, Axel's in the Roseville Radisson Hotel. Please help by giving us your RSVP early, preferably by Thursday, January 10.

For this meeting only, we're inviting non-member guests (normally $35 per person) at the member price of $25 -- further reduced to $20 as a reward for your timely RSVP.

Day 1 Donor - Twin Cities MN

January 18, 2008, 04:38:18 AM

Hello! The first TCXO (Twin Cities) user group meeting was last night and was very educational.  We had (5) five XO in the room and played extensively with shared activities.  This was a joint meeting with the ICCA-MN group, a local association of indepedent computer consultants, so as you can imagine most of the conversations steered toward the technical side.

Before dinner, people mostly mingled and played with the XOs, asking about various aspect of the laptop and activities, with live demonstrations on the capability.  During and after dinner, the conversations were more toward the OLPC mission, the philosophical questions around computers and education, and potential future of the program.

There was a lot of interest from folks that had not participated in the G1G1 program on whether it would be re-instated.  The general consensus was that seeding the US and Canada with 80K XOs and not following up with a continued program would be foolish.  The buzz created just by publicly showing off the XO was noted by several as significant.  80K US and Canada users is still not enough to create the community support system that millions of children will need to assure success and the "stone soup" theory of creating high quality educational material required broad adoption.

The future of the TCXO Users Group is looking good.  We plan to locate a public meeting room somewhat centrally located in the cities for February and start getting the word out.  We figure that there must be a few hundred XO users within a 30 minute drive; now we just have to figure out how to get a hold of them!
