I've updated my laptop to the first stable patch release, 653:

This should let you connect to WPA networks without hackery.

I'm very excited about the impending 656 patch release, which claims to address jumpy touchpad issues, but I'm waiting to let it get the official stamp before I try it out.

The firmware update installed without much fuss...

The OS update was a little rockier... I followed the olpc-update procedure described here:

And learned

1) Make sure you've got a good fast net connection.  My first attempt failed because the network kept dropping.  (So much for using a tmobile hotspot from across the street)

2) Don't be starting up other activities while the update is running.  My second attempt failed due to an Out of Memory condition.

...also, I got some errors while the update script was running (something like "verifying content manifest on line 377"), but then the script went on and did a "dirty rsync" and seemed to sort stuff out.  Leastwise I'm up and running with 653.

Just wanted to share this in case anybody finds the experience of help.
